Chlorophyll a might structure a community of potentially pathogenic culturable Vibrionaceae. Insights from a one-year study of water and mussels surveyed on the French Atlantic coast ArchiMer
Deter, Julie; Lozach, Solen; Derrien, Annick; Veron, Antoine; Chollet, Jaufrey; Hervio-heath, Dominique.
The present study focused on the isolation of culturable bacteria from mussels and sea water to identify Vibrionaceae potentially pathogenic for humans. Three sites located on the French Atlantic coast were monitored monthly (twice each month during summer) for 1 year. Environmental parameters were surveyed (water temperature, salinity, turbidity, chlorophyll a) and bacteria were detected by culture and identified by API 20E(R) systems (BioMerieux) and PCR. A total of seven species were detected (Grimontia hollisae, Photobacterium damselae, Vibrio alginolyticus, V. cholerae, V. fluvialis, V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus) and species diversity was higher at the end of summer. Surprisingly, V. cholerae non-O1/non-O139 was detected in spring. No site...

Confronting species aesthetics with ecological functions in coral reef fish ArchiMer
Tribot, Anne-sophie; Carabeux, Quentin; Deter, Julie; Claverie, Thomas; Villeger, Sebastien; Mouquet, Nicolas.
The biodiversity crisis has spurred scientists to assess all facets of biodiversity so that stakeholders can establish protection programs. However, species that are perceived as beautiful receive more attention than less attractive species. This dynamic could have tremendous consequences on people's willingness to preserve biodiversity. Coral reefs might be particularly affected by this issue as they are key ecosystems that provide many services, such as aesthetic and cultural benefits attracting millions of tourists each year. Here we show the results of an online photographic questionnaire completed by 8,000 participants whereby preferences were assessed for a set of 116 reef fishes. Based on these preferences, we compared the functional richness, i.e....

Coral Reef Fish: Not Just a Matter of Beauty! ArchiMer
Boudin, Elyse; Carcaillet, Frédérique; Tribot, Anne-sophie; Carabeux, Quentin; Deter, Julie; Claverie, Thomas; Villéger, Sébastien; Mouquet, Nicolas.
Coral reefs are vulnerable ecosystems where a great number of fish species live. Some fish are beautiful, and some are not. This study compared the human perception of fish beauty with the ecological roles and characteristics of these fishes. It appears that ugly fish have a wider variety of roles in the coral reef ecosystem than beautiful fish do. This means that the ugly fish seem to be more important for ecosystems. The results of this study warn us about the need to preserve not just cute fishes, but the entire ecosystem, which means protecting the ugly fish as well as the beautiful ones.

Ecology of pathogenic and non-pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus on the French Atlantic coast. Effects of temperature, salinity, turbidity and chlorophyll a ArchiMer
Deter, Julie; Lozach, Solen; Veron, Antoine; Chollet, Jaufrey; Derrien, Annick; Hervio Heath, Dominique.
Vibrio parahaemolyticus is one of the principal bacterial causes for seafood-borne gastroenteritis in the world. In the present study, three sites located on the French Atlantic coast were monitored monthly for environmental parameters over 1 year. The presence of total and pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus in sediment, water and mussel samples was detected following enrichment by culture and real-time PCR (toxR gene, tdh, trh1 and trh2 virulence genes). Using generalized linear models, we showed that the presence of V. parahaemolyticus in water could be explained by a combination of mean temperature over the 7 days before the day of sampling (P < 0.001) and turbidity (P = 0.058). In mussels, an effect of chlorophyll a (P = 0.005) was detected when an...

Environmental DNA metabarcoding reveals and unpacks a biodiversity conservation paradox in Mediterranean marine reserves ArchiMer
Boulanger, Emilie; Loiseau, Nicolas; Valentini, Alice; Arnal, Véronique; Boissery, Pierre; Dejean, Tony; Deter, Julie; Guellati, Nacim; Holon, Florian; Juhel, Jean-baptiste; Lenfant, Philippe; Manel, Stéphanie; Mouillot, David.
Although we are currently experiencing worldwide biodiversity loss, local species richness does not always decline under anthropogenic pressure. This conservation paradox may also apply in protected areas but has not yet received conclusive evidence in marine ecosystems. Here, we survey fish assemblages in six Mediterranean no-take reserves and their adjacent fishing grounds using environmental DNA (eDNA) while controlling for environmental conditions. We detect less fish species in marine reserves than in nearby fished areas. The paradoxical gradient in species richness is accompanied by a marked change in fish species composition under different managements. This dissimilarity is mainly driven by species that are often overlooked by classical visual...

Fine-Scale Cartography of Human Impacts along French Mediterranean Coasts: A Relevant Map for the Management of Marine Ecosystems ArchiMer
Holon, Florian; Mouquet, Nicolas; Boissery, Pierre; Bouchoucha, Marc; Delaruelle, Gwenaelle; Tribot, Anne-sophie; Deter, Julie.
Ecosystem services provided by oceans and seas support most human needs but are threatened by human activities. Despite existing maps illustrating human impacts on marine ecosystems, information remains either large-scale but rough and insufficient for stakeholders (1 km² grid, lack of data along the coast) or fine-scale but fragmentary and heterogeneous in methodology. The objectives of this study are to map and quantify the main pressures exerted on near-coast marine ecosystems, at a large spatial scale though in fine and relevant resolution for managers (one pixel = 20 x 20 m). It focuses on the French Mediterranean coast (1,700 km of coastline including Corsica) at a depth of 0 to 80 m. After completing and homogenizing data presently available under...

Monitoring Marine Habitats With Photogrammetry: A Cost-Effective, Accurate, Precise and High-Resolution Reconstruction Method ArchiMer
Marre, Guilhem; Holon, Florian; Luque, Sandra; Boissery, Pierre; Deter, Julie.
Underwater photogrammetry has been increasingly used to study and monitor the three-dimensional characteristics of marine habitats, despite a lack of knowledge on the quality and reliability of the reconstructions. More particularly, little attention has been paid to exploring and estimating the relative contribution of multiple acquisition parameters on the model resolution (distance between neighbor vertices), accuracy (closeness to true positions/measures) and precision (variability of positions/measures). On the other hand, some studies used expensive or cumbersome camera systems that can restrict the number of users of this technology for the monitoring of marine habitats. This study aimed at developing a simple and cost-effective protocol able to...

Prediction of faecal contamination in shellfish production areas: Interest and limits of the salinity parameter ArchiMer
Le Saux, Jean-claude; Le Vaillant, Gael; Guillermou, Ghislain; Vilbas, Jean-valere; Deter, Julie; Delyon, Bernard; Le Guyader, Soizick; Pommepuy, Monique.
Estuarine areas are sensitive to rapid and punctual contamination linked to heavy rainfall inducing rapid fresh water input. Thus, the increase of seawater contamination may be linked to a salinity decrease. The objective of this study was to measure salinity variation as a proxy to evaluate the risk of faecal contamination. Salinity sensors were set up on shellfish beds in Daoulas estuary (Bay of Brest) and monitored every 10 min over a four year period. Precipitation and river flows were also recorded. Moreover E. coli concentrations and salinity were measured in the estuarine surface water during different hydrodynamic conditions and seasons. The results indicated a significant relationship between E. coli concentration and salinity in the estuary....

Taxonomic and functional diversity increase the aesthetic value of coralligenous reefs ArchiMer
Tribot, Anne-sophie; Mouquet, Nicolas; Villeger, Sebastien; Raymond, Michel; Hoff, Fabrice; Boissery, Pierre; Holon, Florian; Deter, Julie.
The aesthetic value of landscapes contributes to human well-being. However, studies which have investigated the link between biodiversity and ecosystem services have not taken aesthetic value into account. In this study we evaluated how the aesthetics of coralligenous reefs, a key marine ecosystem in the Mediterranean, is perceived by the general public and how aesthetic preferences are related to biodiversity facets (taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversities). We performed both biodiversity measures and online-surveys of aesthetic perception on photographic quadrats sampled along the French Mediterranean coast. Our results show that species richness and functional richness have a significant positive effect on aesthetic value. Most of the...
